The First Transition: World Cinema in the 1930s
This film and lecture series deals with prewar cinema in a variety of cultural contexts, ranging from Hollywood during the Depression (Frank Borzage’s Man’s Castle, Charlie Chaplin’s City Lights, Ernst Lubitsch’s Trouble in Paradise), to the French Popular Front (Jean Renoir’s Le Crime de Monsieur Lange), Japan in the late 30s (Kenji Mizoguchi’s Story of the Late Chrysanthemums), and films from Germany (Fritz Lang’s M). Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum introduces each film.
The series is made possible in part through the sponsorship of American Airlines, the Film Center’s Educational Underwriter, and is presented in cooperation with the School of the Art Institute’s Department of Art History, Theory, and Criticism.
