Overview

Bannockburn is approximately 27 miles north of downtown Chicago, far enough away to have the peace and quiet of a small suburban town, yet close enough to be easily accessible to the modern conveniences of a large metropolitan area. Just ask the World Champion Chicago Bulls, who call neighboring Deerfield's Berto Center their official home practice facility.

The Deerfield, Bannockburn, & Riverwoods area is very fortunate in that access to Chicago's downtown area (the Loop) is as close as the two Metra Milwaukee Road train stations which are both located in Deerfield. One is located in Downtown Deerfield, two blocks west of Waukegan Road and one block north of Deerfield Road (Deerfield Rd. & Chestnut St.) while the other is at Lake Cook at Deer Lake Roads (1 block west of Waukegan Road).

Lake Cook Rd is the major east-west artery through the most southern area of Deerfield. Both have large parking lots for commuters, however the Lake Cook Station, has a shuttle service (Commuter Shuttle Services) which helps deliver many commuters to and from businesses in Deerfield and Riverwoods. In addition, Deerfield, Bannockburn & Riverwoods are all located within 2-3 miles of the Edens Expressway, a direct route to Chicago or Milwaukee.

The three villages are within l5 miles of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport, a short ride down the Tri-State Tollway with access from both Deerfield Road and Lake Cook Road in Deerfield as well as Half Day Road in Bannockburn. The Tollway (I-294) goes north to Wisconsin and south to I-80, which is the Illinois connection to Indiana.

HISTORY

Settled in 1924 by developer William Aitken, Bannockburn was intended to be exclusively for members of his bridge group and country club. Bannockburn was almost entirely residential until 1968 when an industrial park was approved. In 1984 the suburb zoned its first commercial area on Route 22. The village did not have a full-time police department until the late 1970's, and there was no city hall until 1992.

Despite its growth in the last few decades, Bannockburn remains smaller than the other Chicago suburbs. In 2000 the population was only 1,429. The population in 2005 was over 1,600.
