OVERVIEW
The Village of Hanover Park straddles the Cook and DuPage County lines, approximately 27 miles northwest of the Chicago Loop. Originally named Ontarioville, it was incorporated as Hanover Park in 1958 to avoid annexation by a nearby town. A busy youthful community, Hanover Park has much to offer its residents. The Park District maintains 21 parks with facilities for tennis, swimming, ice skating, soccer, basketball, picnics, and other planned activities. Natural wildlife and bird refuges can be seen in the thousands of acres of local forest preserves. These areas also provide residents with biking and horseback-riding trails, fishing, boating, and hiking. A short trip to neighborhood communities brings easy access to golf courses, theaters, sports, and country clubs.
Located along the Metra West Line, commuters are only 45 minutes from downtown Chicago. Major Interstates I-90, I-290, and I-88 are a short distance away, allowing residents easy access to all the cultural and recreational facilities Chicago has to offer. For the traveler, O'Hare International Airport is a convenient 17 miles from Hanover Park. DuPage County Airport and Schaumburg Regional Airport service private aircraft and charter flights.
Economic growth in Hanover Park is encouraged and continues to attract new business and housing developments, and excellent schools provide an outstanding education for the children. In 2005 Hanover Park was named a contender in the state of Illinois for the CNNMoney.com list of the Best Places to Live. The Village continually strives to provide its residents with well-planned growth and development along with an attractive and safe environment.
HISTORY
The Hanover Park area was originally settled in the 1820's as Ontarioville by settlers from Indiana. Prior to 1854 farmers depended on agriculture to support their families. Phineas H. Smith started shipping milk from his dairy to Chicago by way of an ox team. This started a shift from farming to dairying.
Ten years later cheese factories appeared. Other businesses included three creameries. The main form of public transportation was a stagecoach line that carried people as far as Galena.
In 1872 the Chicago & Pacific Railroad reached the town after land was donated for the construction of a depot, bringing residents access to the Midwest states. New homes were being constructed by Edwin Bartlett in 1874, and a few years later the town was thriving.
After World War II, the area grew rapidly, and to prevent encroachment from surrounding towns, Ontarioville was incorporated in 1958 as Hanover Park, named after Hanover, Germany. The population then was 305, and the land area was less than a square mile. Over the years growth has continued, with the village now encompassing six square miles with a population of over 37,000 people.
