Huntley - Overview, History, Government Offices, Utilities, Schools, Trivia

OVERVIEW

The former sleepy little Village of Huntley has been transformed into a fast-growing, popular community located in southern McHenry County and northern Kane County along Route 47 and bordered on the south by Interstate 90. It lies approximately 45 minutes west of the Chicago Business Loop and 30 minutes west of O'Hare International Airport. Neighboring communities include Lake-in-the-Hills, Algonquin, Crystal Lake, Gilberts, Marengo, and Woodstock.

Huntley's excellent school system and new, well-planned housing developments with walking trails, ponds, and play areas are drawing thousands of new residents of all ages to this country village. A new recreation center, ten beautiful parks, Pinecrest Golf Course, and the Stingray Bay Aquatic Center provide endless hours of pleasure and fun for all residents. Neighboring Algonquin has the Randall Road shopping corridor with new stores opening monthly. Huntley's proximity to Interstate 90 and nearby Metra train service makes commuting to Chicago and Rockford seem effortless. Despite its continuing growth, the Village of Huntley has something for everyone and will always be a community with a proud history and a bright future.

HISTORY

Founded in 1851, Huntley was first inhabited in 1838 by settlers from New York and New England. One of these settlers, Thomas Stillwell Huntley and his family, acquired land north of the future village and later purchased more land to the south. The Chicago and Galena Railroad built a railroad reaching Huntley in 1851. A few frame homes were built near the railroad, and Mr. Huntley also built a general store there. The railroad was critical to the economic development of the area. Huntley was well known at that time as a dairy center, and the railroad was the means of shipping products to and from Chicago.

Huntley remained a small farming community until growth in the village started escalating in 1993 when Prime Development built the Prime Outlet Mall, auto dealerships, and industrial parks. Del Webb Sun City, an age-restricted community, was built shortly after, and residents started occupying homes in 1999. Residential real estate development exploded in 2005 in Huntley, and the projected population for the year 2010 is expected to quadruple to 44,000 people.
