The Illinois Artisans Shop and ISM Chicago Gallery are located on the second floor of the Thompson Center, downtown Chicago.

The Illinois State Museum Chicago Gallery exhibits and promotes the work of contemporary and historical Illinois artists. The changing exhibition schedule presents Illinois art to a statewide as well as a national and international audience.  For further details, please click again on "Visitor Information" on the menu to the left.

The Illinois State Museum opened its doors in Chicago in May, 1985, with the inauguration of the distinctively post-modern James R. Thompson Center, designed by Chicago architect Helmut Jahn. Our recently renovated spacious galleries have for twenty years specialized in showcasing contemporary and historical fine artists such as Edith Altman, Don Baum, Phyllis Bramson, Rodney Carswell, Tom Czarnopys, Ruth Duckworth, Julia Fish, Judith Geichman, Theodore Halkin, Richard Hunt, Mr. Imagination, Michiko Itatani, Vera Clement, and Frank Piatek, along with important historic artists such as Gertrude Abercrombie, Manierre Dawson, G.P.A. Healy, Nathan Lerner, Lazslo Moholy-Nazy, and William Schwartz, to name a few.

Our exhibition schedule ranges across mediums, including our outstanding quilt collection in the Decorative Arts area to electronic art, installations, and collaborative exhibitions wilth community organizations.

We provide free group tours and special programs upon request. Please call 312.814.5322 for an appointment.

Parking/Accessibility:
There are several public parking lots available within a block or two of the James R. Thompson Center. Metered street parking is limited. The Chicago Transit Authority's Clark & Lake station is served by the Blue, Brown, Orange, and Purple line trains The gallery is handicapped accessible.
